Course Description

This course aims to provide students with a thorough understanding of the capabilities of GIS, as well as the practical skills to carry out GIS analysis in the context of mass appraisal of real property.

The course covers the following topics: representation of geographic information, spatial analysis methods and tools (such as map algebra, buffering, overlay and spatial querying), multi-criteria evaluation, spatial statistics, cartography and geographic visualisation, error propagation, approaches to valuing real property. Lectures and exercises will cover both theoretical and practical examples.

Laboratory exercises
Exercises will be held in Fagott, Maclean and V27t to v29t computer rooms, Students will have access to computer rooms through the KTH-account when the course starts. Exercises will be conducted using ESRI’s
ArcGIS and Clark LabsIDRISI GIS software.

Students should work two in a group and submit group reports for each exercise when asked for and for the final project.
To the end of the course a poster presentation seminar is required.
Exercises will be randomly assessed.

10 Bonus points toward the exam will be given to students who submit and pass all their lab/project reports.
5 Bonus points toward the exam will be given to students who present their poster before the deadlines.

Final project
One of the requirements for this course is for students to design and carry out their own GIS project. The work on this project will be done independently (in pairs) and in own time. Help will be provided during occasional meetings (see the schedule for more info on these, attendance is not obligatory during these times, the idea is that you work on your project whenever YOU have time). During these meetings, a teacher will be available in lab to answer students' questions.

Examination
Tuesday, October 20, 14:00-18:00, Rooms V01, V11, V12, V23

Grades
