Regain and Sustain Modernist Housing – on energy efficiency, architecture and sustainable urban development in the Stockholm City Districts of Järva
KTH and IVL have joined forces in a Centre for Sustainable Developmnet in order to develop broader cooperation. In a pilot study funded by the Centre we now develop a larger project. Cooperation also with Stockholm City and its municipal housing companies as well as other local stakeholders is also aimed at. As a first step, we have participated together with eight other European Cities in an INTERREG IVC application, where the Swedish project will be a pilot study within a much larger framework. The guiding vision of the core project can be defined through a number of questions: How could the oncoming renewal of the 1960s modernist housing best contribute to sustainable urban development? How could renewal be realized so as to markedly reduce the district's energy use and in general increase its level of sustainability? What actors need to cooperate and in what forms? How could goal conflicts be handled, for example between renewal and preservation, among stakeholders, or between need for investments and lack of funding? These issues are explored with the city districts of Järva in north-west Stockholm as cases. However, the knowledge gained should be applicable also to other districts and cities, to some extent also in other countries.
