Research interest

Development and use of Life cycle assessment (LCA), Strategic environmental assessment (SEA), and other environmental systems analysis tools for decision-making, planning and policy-making. Applications in waste management, energy use and supply, production and consumption.

 

Research Projects

Environmental Assessment of Waste Management (project period2007-2011, funded by the Swedish EPA) This project is part of the research program ”Tools for Sustainable Waste Management”, financed by the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency. The aim of the project is to contribute to sustainable waste management by assessing the effectiveness of waste policy instruments with regard to life-cycle environmental impacts. Such policy instruments will be proposed by another project within this research program. Waste and environmental process data of the Swedish waste management system will be compiled in a generally accessible data package, and further implemented in a generic LCA-tool, which will be used to assess life cycle environmental impacts of policy instruments. Substance flow analysis (SFA) will be used as a complement for more detailed analyses of the risk of increased and/or uncontrolled flows of hazardous substances.

Exploring Strategic Environmental Assessment and Public Participation Tools (project period 2003-2006, funded by the Swedish EPA) This project is part of the research program "Tools for environmental assessment in strategic decision-making" (MiSt). It aims developing contemporary planning practice by applying and evaluating a set of analytical tools for strategic environmental assessment (SEA) together with novel tools for public participation. Methodological development is done in a real case setting, where Finspång municipality is developing a municipal energy plan.

 

Indicators for IPP (project period 2004-2006, funded by the Swedish EPA) Indicators for IPP (integrated Product Policy), measuring the aggregate impacts of production and consumption, are developed for the Swedish and European level. A combination of product specific LCA and branch level input-output data is used. A model is being implemented in the LCA software SimaPro.

 

Energy from waste (project period 2002-2003, funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, STEM) LCA of Swedish waste management, evaluation of a proposed national waste incineration tax.

 

Systems analysis of waste management (project period 1996-2001, funded by the Swedish EPA and the Swedish Energy Agency, STEM) Development of the ORWARE model for substance flow analysis (SFA) and LCA of municipal waste management (PhD project).
