After graduating as an architect, I practiced doing refurbishments, and later with ”green architecture”. I was employed as a Ph. D. Student in autumn, 1995, and got my Ph. D. four years later. In January 2001, my first Ph. D. student was employed and she made her Licentiate in spring, 2003. I was appointed Associate Professor during the same year, and in 2006, my first two doctoral students made their Ph. D. In 2009, I was appointed full Professor. In all, I have supervised six doctoral students. In parallel, I have participated in undergraduate education. From 2010 I am responsible for a track within a new Masters’ programme. With the exception of the undergraduate teaching, all activities, including my own Ph. D. education, have been fully financed via external funding that I rose; they were also based on applications I developed. From the autumn of 2007 on I am the project leader of a 5-year, cross-disciplinary research project that I initiated, involving two Ph. D. students and a number of seniors including one each from ETH Zürich and the University of the West of England, and with a budget of € 1,1 million.

Research interest

Örjan has long experience as a practising architect, doing project design and implementation as well as resident consultation, mainly applied to the refurbishment of housing. He also practised within the field of sustainable construction. These themes he combined in his research. He has participated in research also on households, housing and sustainability and on experimental eco-building. Since the early 2000s, his research focus is on strategic planning and governance, energy and climate issues, all under the umbrella term of urban sustainable development.

Research Projects

In 2010, Örjan is occupied with various projects in parallel. He is supervising a number of Masters’ Theses and Ph. D. students, he is responsible for the “Environment and Planning” track of a new Master’s programme and teaches the Masters’ course “Sustainable Planning and Design”. Furthermore, he is involved in a number of projects concerning urban sustainable development. For example, he is the leader of the research project ”Situations of Opportunity for City Transformation– towards sustainable resource use in three Stockholm City districts” (SitCit for short). The latter is a large project in cooperation with KTH Energy Technology, the University of West of England and ETH, Zürich, involving senior researchers as well as PhD students, and running between 2007 and 2012.
