Welcome to the Geodesy Division

CarToEllipsoid

School of Architecture and the Built Environment

Department of Urban Planning and Environment

Geodesy is one of the oldest natural sciences and for long time it was associated with astronomy. As a science, geodesy deals with studies of the figure of the earth, its gravity field and geodynamic phenomena. Geodesy is an interdisciplinary science which uses spaceborne and airborne remotely sensed, and ground-based measurements to precisely determine position and velocity of points or objects at the surface or orbiting the planet, within a realized terrestrial reference system, and to apply these knowledge to a variety of scientific and engineering applications, using mathematics, physics, astronomy, and computer science.

Headed by Prof. Lars E. Sjöberg, the Division pursues research activities in various geodetic fields of both theoretical and applied characters. Together with the Geoinformatics Division, the Geodesy Division is responsible for the Surveying Engineering Specialisation within the civil engineering and urban management programme. Also, since the Autumn semester of 2004, the Geodesy and Geoinformatics Divisions are running the International Master Programme in Geodesy and Geoinformatics (IMPGG) which is taught in English.

Professor emeritus Arne Bjerhammar peacefully passed away on February 6, 2011, at 19.15. Click here to read the obituary.
