Scholarship opportunities for Master’s programmes
There will be scholarship opportunities available for students, who are citizens of non-EU/EEA/EFTA countries. The scholarships will cover the tuition fee at KTH.
On short notice, there may also possibly be a few scholarships which offer partial coverage of the tuition fee.
All candidates applying for a Master’s Programme at KTH as first priority are automatically considered for a scholarship nomination for that specific programme. The number of scholarships is limited and scholarships are granted on basis of academic excellence.
A number of scholarships are reserved for regions prioritized by KTH as “special focus areas”. These regions are, for the academic year 2011/2012, Brazil, Canada, China, India, Thailand, USA and Vietnam. In order to be considered eligible from one of these regions you must be a citizen from a non-EU/EEA/EFTA country and you must have completed your Bachelor’s degree in one of the abovementioned regions. A minimum of 2 scholarships per region is guaranteed, and the ranking process will be based on academic excellence.
The remaining number of scholarships will be allocated to students who are citizens of non- EU/EEA/EFTA countries and the allocation decision of the scholarships is solely based on academic excellence.
Students nominated for a scholarship will be contacted directly by KTH.

Application and tuition fees!!!
Application and tuition fees introduced in Sweden from autumn 2011
Following a decision by the Swedish Parliament in April 2010, students with citizenship in a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland will be required to pay tuition fees for their education at Swedish Higher Education Institutions, as of the autumn term 2011 (see below for exceptions).
Tuition fees are to be introduced for programmes and courses at first cycle (Bachelor) and second cycle (Master) levels. Each institution determines the size of the fee based on the principle of full cost coverage.
Application fee
The application fee amount for applying to the autumn term 2011 will be 900 SEK (Swedish kronor) per student. More information:
Tuition fees at KTH
KTH has decided upon the following fees for the academic year 2011/2012:
- Programmes and courses within all subject areas except for Architecture: 145 000 SEK (Swedish kronor) per academic year (60 ECTS)
- Programmes and courses within the subject area Architecture: 245 000 SEK (Swedish kronor) per academic year (60 ECTS)
For shorter study periods, i.e. those not amounting to a full academic year, pricing will be based on the amount of credits in accordance with the above stated prices.
The tuition fee will be charged in advance for each term (30 ECTS).
Who is required to pay application and tuition fees?
In general, individuals who are citizens of countries outside of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland are required to pay application and tuition fees.
There are some exceptions to this general rule, for instance people who have a permanent residence permit or residence permit for reasons other than studies in Sweden. Exchange students, i.e. students registered at a university outside of Sweden who will be studying in Sweden on a temporary basis as part of an official study abroad programme are also exempted.
For a list of criteria which exempts individuals, meaning they do not have to pay tuition and fees, please visit:
If you do not meet any of these criteria, you are most likely required to pay fees.
Requirements for students who have started a course or programme in Sweden before autumn 2011:
- If you are a registered student at a Swedish University or University college at the time you submit your application, you are not required to pay an application fee.
- If you started a course or programme before 1 July 2011, you may finish that course or programme without paying tuition fees. If you apply for and are given a place in a new course or programme that starts after 1 July 2011, you must pay a tuition fee for the new course or programme.
- If you are combining courses towards a degree (but are not officially registered in a programme), you may finish that course without paying tuition fee if you started it before 1 July 2011. If you start a new course or courses after 1 July 2011, you will be required to pay tuition fees for that course/ courses.
